Landscapes in transformation
Talk with ethnologist Signe Skjoldborg Brieghel, assistant professor & landscape historian Bo Fritzbøger, associate professor, both Saxo Institute UCPH.
Ethnologist Signe Skjoldborg Brieghel will give a presentation on wetlands: “Wet roots: understories from the swamp forest”. Abstract: “In Denmark as elsewhere, wetlands have become key sites for green transition policies and practices, framed primarily as carbon sinks in response to climate change. Climate neutrality is often pursued through two dominant strategies: planting trees or rewetting drained landscapes. Between these approaches lies the swamp forest – ecologically rich, historically inhabited, yet politically and conceptually overlooked. This talk traces ‘wet roots’ through understories: both the forest understory and the underrepresented histories and practices rooted in flood-prone landscapes. Swamp forests emerge as dynamic zones of multispecies survival and knowledge, complicating dominant narratives of climate mitigation.
Landscape historian Bo Fritzbøger will give a presentation on the “Main trends in Danish landscape development since 1770”. Abstract: “The fundamental structures of Danish rural landscapes were produced during the late 18th-century land reform period, but since then a multitude of minor interventions have been made to enhance land use efficiency. Today, this quest for efficiency increasingly applies to nature restoration, decarbonization, and outdoor life”.
